Importance of Education:

Education is indispensable for the overall growth of an individual. Education is of great social importance in the modern industrialized societies, like that of Singapore. From time immemorial, philosophers have devoted their time and attention to education. Various theories have been formulated regarding the role of education in society.

The first and foremost importance of education lies in completing the socialization process. The child is sent to school to know about the nation’s past glory and history. Education becomes the key means by which culture gets transmitted from one generation to another. Every society has its unique culture. The social organizations pass on the social heritage (culture) to the new generation.

Apart from fulfilling a social role, education is also important for personal growth of an individual. Education greatly influence an individual’s shaping of society. Education also plays an important role in reforming the character of an individual. The wrong attitude inculcated by an individual can be reformed and redressed through education. Even for earning one’s livelihood, education is needed. To make one’s self capable of sustenance, education is needed. Education inculcates the spirit of healthy competition which is crucial for individual progress, growth and success.

Role of Playgroup:

Playgroup is a less formal organization than preschool. They are usually formed by parents who are not working elsewhere. They have care givers who are trained and know how to educate children who are below five years of age. Playgroup in Singapore are found in plenty, because maximum of the population that constitute of the parents are working outside. Thus playgroup become the first educational institute for the child.

Playgroups in Singapore teach the children how to interact with other. Mostly importantly as it is the first social group of the child outside family, it teaches the child the virtue of sharing, it also enhances the confidence of the child as the child understands that it can survive and sustain himself or herself outside the cocoon of his or her family. Playgroup care givers also teach the child the basic etiquette in a playful manner that stays with the child for the rest of their lives.

Thus playgroups in Singapore and elsewhere play a very important role in the life of the children. They not only prepare the child for the formal institutionalized system of education but also lay the first foundation of education upon which the schools can build their superstructure.
