It is widely accepted that a kid’s formative years right from birth to when they are 5 years old, are the most crucial and emphatic in terms of how the child shapes up to be an adult. These are the most impressionable years of a child when he/she learns to walk, talk and engage with the world around them. Most of our inclinations and idiosyncrasies are formed in this period. Hence it is of utmost importance to have meaningful, positive and uplifting interactions with parents, teachers and care givers at that age. There has been a recent shift in peopleâs mindsets regarding early education and child care, that there needs to be better quality education provided to children by specialized teachers and care givers in order for them to have brighter future prospects. People are beginning to see the effectiveness of specialized teachers and the difference between being taught by trained professionals and untrained ones. This was not the case two decades ago.
With Singapore being a culturally diverse country, it is all the more important for care givers in child care centres in Singapore to be more knowledgeable, trained and culturally aware. There is scientific evidence to prove that lack of adequate attention, care and security by the childâs care givers can lead to some major changes in the way a child deals with stress. Children form developmental connections with not only their parents but also with their caregivers and teachers.
Also it is found that children cared for by teachers that were rated as indifferent, neglectful and interfering showed greater levels of stress hormones, anxiousness and lower immunity levels. There was a study conducted about child care centres in Singapore called âStarting Wellâ that surveyed 1,395 parents on topics like importance of early education for children and its accompanying challenges. According to the results, 96% of the parents surveyed thought of preschool as being important or crucial to their childrenâs growth and development. Additionally a lot of parents were concerned about the quality of education being provided in child care centres with the conclusion being there needs to be a revision in pay structure for preschool teachers in order to attract graduates and specialized teachers.
A specialized teacherâs training enables them to be able to develop childrenâs intellectual ability, language skills, interpersonal skills, artistic talent and expression, dexterity and spatial awareness, health and nutrition and understanding of culture. The need to have specialized teachers for child care centres cannot be emphasized enough.
